edge of the storm
Hmm. Apparently you can hardly get into the grocery store and if you do, there’s nothing left. I assume Austin is fairly safe, otherwise evacuees from elsewhere wouldn’t be coming here. All the evacuee centres are full up. People are coming here to shop because other towns are empty, though. But we can expect terrible weather in the next few days and, living in a little wooden house, maybe damage. Power will probably go out some time. Luckily I have lots of IKEA tea-lights. Hmm again.
So, hopefully a big tree won’t come through a window and kill us Saturday night, and I guess we’re going out soon to try and buy a few things to eat and drink in case we’re hiding indoors a couple of days, which I imagine will be tins of Mexican beans and the flavour of fizzy pop that nobody likes.
I was wondering why people build these little wooden houses that turn to matchsticks in a storm, in places where there are storms. Then I realised it’s because they’re cheap to replace. Very comforting.
Update: the grocery store was fine, I don’t know what all the fuss was about. There wasn’t much bottled water but I bought Mexican fizzy pop anyway. Did you know it comes in guava and tamarind? How cool is that?

One of these days you and I are going to meet at the HEB!
I got through the grocery lines OK. Lots of people in Austin are hosting guests from Houston and Corpus, so they are freaking out. MUST FEED THE RELATIVES!
So far, sounds like we’ll get only rain and some wind, now that Rita has shifted eastwards.

Hi Alice
Florida seems so much more sensible than Texas now! Anyway a Cat. 4 hurricane can’t really be much worse than a stormy winter’s day on the beach at Weston-Super-Mud.
At least it will be warm!
We are going back to the UK next week, so if you want any tea bags……

Well, it’s Friday lunchtime and no rain yet…
Hi Mike, does the offer of tea-bags mean you are coming over to the US again, perchance to live? I guess there are more Brits in Florida than Texas, heard one in HEB the other day and nearly fell over in shock.
